Scott McCloud

In the vast overstatement of the century, Scott McCloud defined comics as "sequential art". That it is a spacial depiction of time in some distinct order I do not disagree with, but that it is "art" I cannot be convinced. Though there was no definition of "comics" given, the author seemed to find parallel between this pop cultural icon achieving its hype in the 1960s and the wonder of the hieroglyphics of the Ancient Egyptians. This cynicism is not grown from the snobbish statement of art as only a fine art; but instead comes from out of a sense that art should be defined as an intent to activate the viewer through complex reasoning and an attention to the act of creation. Roy Lichtenstein, for example, gave the medium purpose by first extracting it from its 'non-art' context; and even his work was seen as a "low art" for this association with this pop iconography.

Nevertheless, time is definitely an important and profound phenomena of innovative sequencing with association with still imagery. But that makes it a fantastic tool, but never an art in itself.
